What EMDR Involves

What does an EMDR session involve?

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a structured therapy that helps the brain work through distressing memories that have not settled on their own. It does not require retelling your story in detail, which matters for many people who do not want to relive the events aloud.

A session focuses on a specific memory or experience while you follow a set of bilateral movements, typically side-to-side eye movements guided by your therapist. The aim is to help the memory lose its charge and become something that happened to you rather than something that is still happening.

EMDR moves through phases, from preparation and resourcing to processing and closing. Your therapist will walk you through each step before it happens. Sessions are held in our Laguna Beach office or by telehealth across California.
