What This Looks Like
What does couples counseling look like at Third Street Counseling?
In Laguna Beach or by telehealth across California. You would see Brian Stubbs.
Couples counseling at Third Street Counseling is led by Brian Stubbs, AMFT, trained in the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy. Falling in love is easy. Staying in love, all while feeling safe, playful, and connected, is trickier, and often how people find their way to couples work. Maybe every attempt to bring up something real turns into a fight, or worse, a slow fade into silence.
Relationships are one of the most powerful places we have to grow: learning to soften our defenses, deepen our compassion, and stay open when every instinct says to shut down or strike back. The work itself is the path back to each other.
Brian will help you slow down the patterns that keep tripping you up, understand what is underneath your reactivity and your partner's, and rebuild the kind of emotional and physical connection that made you want to do this in the first place.
The Gottman Method is a structured, research-based approach that focuses on the patterns couples fall into, the small moments that build or erode connection, and the practical skills that help two people turn toward each other instead of away. You can read more about it on our Gottman Method and EFT page.
Emotionally Focused Therapy works at the level of emotional bond. It helps couples see the cycle they are caught in, the one where one person's withdrawal triggers the other's pursuit, or vice versa, and step out of it together. The two approaches complement each other, and Brian draws on both depending on what the moment calls for.
Some couples come to counseling on the brink of a decision. Others come because they want to strengthen a relationship that is already good. Both are valid reasons. The free consult is the place to talk about where you are and what you are looking for.
Free, no obligation. No pressure, no sales pitch.

How to Start
How do I get started with couples counseling?
You talk with a clinician, we learn what is going on, and we match you with the right therapist.
Every new couple begins with a free consult. You reach out through our contact form or by phone, and we schedule a short call to understand what is going on and whether we are the right fit. There is no paperwork to fill out before this call, and no commitment to continue.
If it is a fit, we schedule your first session at our Laguna Beach office or by telehealth. If it is not, we will help you find someone who is, here or elsewhere. You can also learn more about what to expect on our insights page about your first therapy session in Laguna Beach.
Common Questions
Common questions about couples counseling
Four questions we are asked most, answered before you call.
Do we need to be in crisis to start couples counseling?
No. Some couples come to counseling on the brink of a decision. Others come because they want to strengthen a relationship that is already good. Both are valid reasons. The free consult is the place to talk about where you are and what you are looking for.
What if my partner is reluctant to come?
That is common. The free consult is a low-pressure conversation, not a commitment. Some partners are more open to the idea once they understand that couples counseling is about building skills and understanding, not about assigning blame. We will not force it.
Can we do couples counseling by telehealth?
Yes. Telehealth works well for couples counseling. Both partners need to be in the same room for the session, or on the same call if you are in different locations. As long as both of you are in California, telehealth is available.
What approaches does Brian Stubbs use?
Brian Stubbs is trained in the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy, two of the most widely researched approaches to couples work. The Gottman Method focuses on patterns and practical skills. EFT works at the level of emotional bond. You can read more on our Gottman Method and EFT page.
