What This Looks Like

What does somatic therapy look like at Third Street Counseling?

In Laguna Beach or by telehealth across California. You would see David Lindquist, LMFT.

Somatic therapy at Third Street Counseling uses Integrative Body Psychotherapy (IBP), an approach that works with how anxiety, stress, and past experience are held in the body rather than through talk alone. David Lindquist, LMFT, is a certified IBP practitioner who has taught IBP to other therapists. He delivers this work in our Laguna Beach office and by telehealth.

IBP integrates body awareness, breath, and movement with traditional talk therapy. A session might involve noticing where tension lives in your body, tracking physical sensations alongside emotions, and using breath or posture to release patterns that have become locked in place. The goal is not to relive the past but to help your nervous system settle so the present feels more manageable.

Somatic therapy is one approach among several. For some clients, EMDR is a better fit for processing specific traumatic memories. For others, a steady talk-therapy relationship is the foundation. The free consult is the place to talk through which approach suits you.

Common Questions

Common questions about somatic therapy

Three questions we are asked most, answered before you call.

What is Integrative Body Psychotherapy?

IBP is a somatic therapy approach that integrates body awareness, breath, and movement with talk therapy. It was developed to help people work with how stress, anxiety, and past experience are held in the body. David Lindquist, LMFT, is a certified IBP practitioner and has taught IBP to other therapists.

Can somatic therapy be done by telehealth?

Yes. Body awareness and breath work translate well to telehealth. You will need a private space and a device with a camera. Some clients find that being in their own space actually helps them notice bodily sensations more easily.

Is somatic therapy the same as EMDR?

No. Both work with the body and the nervous system, but they are distinct approaches. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to process specific memories. IBP uses body awareness, breath, and posture to release patterns held in the body. David Lindquist, LMFT, offers both.
