What This Looks Like
What does CBIT therapy look like at Third Street Counseling?
In Laguna Beach or by telehealth across California. You would see David Lindquist, LMFT.
CBIT, or Comprehensive Behavioural Intervention for Tics, is a structured behavioural therapy that helps people manage tics without medication. David Lindquist, LMFT, delivers CBIT in our Laguna Beach office and by telehealth across California. He is trained in CBIT and Habit Reversal Training.
CBIT has three main parts. First, you learn to become more aware of the urge that comes before a tic. Second, you learn a competing response, a specific behaviour that is physically incompatible with the tic, so the tic cannot happen while the competing response is in place. Third, you identify and adjust situations in your environment that make tics worse.
The process is collaborative and paced to you or your child. For children and teens, parents are part of the process so the strategies extend beyond the session. You can learn more about what a first session involves on our first therapy session insights page.
Free, no obligation. No pressure, no sales pitch.

Yes. CBIT is used with children, teens, and adults. The core techniques are the same, but the way they are taught adapts to age and developmental level. David Lindquist, LMFT, works with all ages.
Is CBIT the same as Habit Reversal Training?
Habit Reversal Training is the central technique within CBIT. CBIT adds awareness training, competing responses, and environmental adjustments as a complete package. David is trained in both.

Yes. CBIT can be delivered effectively by telehealth. The awareness training and competing response practice work the same way on screen as in person. You will need a private space and a device with a camera.
