About Brian

Who is Brian?

Working under the supervision of Michele Hall-Preston, LMFT, so a second licensed clinician reviews the clinical work.

Brian Stubbs, AMFT, is an associate therapist at Third Street Counseling in Laguna Beach, trained in the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy. He works with couples and adults, and every new client begins with a free consult to confirm the right fit.

He is trained in the Gottman Method and in Emotionally Focused Therapy, two of the most studied approaches to couples work. He describes his own approach as warm, direct, and sometimes challenging: slowing down the patterns a couple keeps repeating, finding what sits underneath each partner's reactivity, and rebuilding the connection underneath it.

He sees couples, and adults individually, in the Laguna Beach office and by telehealth across California.

A Personal Note

A personal note from Brian

Falling in love is easy. Staying in love, all while feeling safe, playful, and connected, is trickier, and often how people find their way to me. If you are here, there is a good chance you and your partner used to feel each other more easily than you do now. Maybe every attempt to bring up something real turns into a fight, or worse, a slow fade into silence. You have learned to protect yourselves from each other instead of turning toward each other, and it is probably exhausting.

I do not believe that is the end of the story. Relationships are one of the most powerful places we have to grow: learning to soften our defenses, deepen our compassion, and stay open when every instinct says to shut down or strike back. That old cliche that relationships take work? It is true. But the work itself is the path back to each other.

My approach is warm, direct, and sometimes challenging, because real change usually is. I will help you slow down the patterns that keep tripping you up, understand what is underneath your reactivity and your partner's, and rebuild the kind of emotional and physical connection that made you want to do this in the first place. Most of us were never taught how to tend to our most important relationship, so it makes sense to reach out for help in doing that.

I am trained in the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy, if that matters to you. Mostly, I am here to help you find your way back to each other.
